I am constantly hearing in the media how our obesity epidemic is causing all sorts of lifestyle diseases. It seems that the very act of being overweight predisposes you to a whole range of conditions. And by default it also means that by losing weight, you will automatically become healthier. Is this true?
Well believe it or not, I would argue no. It is not the fact that you are overweight that is making you unhealthy; it is the lifestyle that led you there. Am I being pedantic? Well possibly so, but for good reason. You see, if it's your lifestyle (not your weight) that makes you unhealthy, then it's your lifestyle (not your weight) that is the key to becoming healthy once again.
There are plenty of ways to lose weight that aren't very good for you, from crash dieting and starvation to weird unbalanced diets and over-the-top exercise regimes. In the long run, these weight-loss measures often make you less healthy, not more. After all, there are plenty of unhealthy skinny people out there!
So if you're worried about being overweight, focus on the real problem: your lifestyle. Eat a balanced diet, get some regular exercise and utilise some effective affirmations and goals. Do all of these things, and your weight will take care of itself.
