moveMovement is not just an optional extra as many people seem to think, it is a vital part of a having a healthy body. In fact movement (particularly of the spine) has been called an essential nutrient for brain function and development.

Of course when I talk about movement I am talking about both quality and quantity.

Quantity is pretty simple, you should aim to do some exercise for at least half an hour every single day. The easiest way to do this is to make sure that you take every opportunity that presents itself to move. i.e. take the stairs at work or park at the back of the car park and walk to the shops.

Quality of movement has several aspects to it. Ensuring that your body is able to work efficiently is very important and getting regular chiropractic adjustments are vital to ensure that the movement you do is quality. You also need to ensure that you are covering all of the different areas of fitness. There are ten key fitness skills that you need to cover, they are endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. Finally you need to ensure that your exercise technique is safe and effective. Doing the exercises in the correct manner will make sure that you are less likely to get injured, you can achieve more and that you will get the full benefit out of the exercise that you do.

Of course it is also important to look at the other side of the equation and minimise your physical stressors. There are several different types of physical stressors. There are the big ones that readily spring to mind like car crashes, sports injuries or lifting accidents. Then there are the smaller repeated ones that people tend to think of less, such as postures maintained over time, or repetitive tasks that we do every day either at work or at home. In fact one of the biggest physical stressors that people tend to forget about is birth, in fact research says that for over 80% of people the first problems they have in their spine start at birth.

If you have physical stressors in your life that are causing your body to not function at it's best it may be a good idea to get a chiropractic check up.
