Headaches can come from a number of sources. Common causes of headaches are nerve interference, muscle referrals, altered blood supply to the head and dehydration. There can also be more serious but rare causes of headaches.
So, what can a chiropractor do for headaches? Well, firstly they can help you find out what is causing the headaches. The will ask questions and run tests to help diagnose the problem. If it is something serious that is not within the scope of chiropractic, they will refer you on. But more often than not there will be some issues there that the chiropractor can help you out with.
Often people with headaches will have restrictions and nerve interference (subluxations) in their spine, often in the very upper neck. These subluxations cause nerve interference; they also affect the muscles in the surrounding area and can even affect the blood flow to the head. By removing these subluxations your body will be allowed to return to normal function, including greater mobility and less muscle tension, and often the headaches will go away.
Remember, though, that the aim of the chiropractic care is not to ‘treat' headaches. The aim is to get your body functioning at it's best, whether you have headaches or not. In fact often people will come in to see a chiropractor for ‘treatment' of their headaches and will notice changes in many other areas of their health and wellness as well.
